Welcome To Kevin's Tomato Page

May 13 to June 2 - 2008

Just one little plant to look at right now. Germination has been tough since the weather has been inconsistent. These photos are (from left to right) from the time period of May 13 - June 2. It's warming up again here in San Pedro so things are speeding up.

June 9 to June 12 - 2008

Our tomato plant is doing real well. It's getting plenty of Sun and spreading out. We may plant another one in the space below.

June 19 through June 23 - 2008

Our one and only tomato plant is really going through a growth spurt. It's doubled in size in the last ten days. This is an indeterminate tomato plant so I have staked it for support. We should be seeing some flowers in the next week to ten days I hope. The two pictures on the far right are from June 23. It never fails to amaze me how fast a tomato plant can grow under optimum conditions. Right now it's hot and sunny in San Pedro.

June 28 through June 30 - 2008

Outstanding growth continues from our one tomato plant. Thank goodness I only cultivated one plant. I was contemplating having three. That would have been a huge mistake. It has already started to flower. I will have to stake it in several more places. The main vine is about as thick as a man's thumb. All other vines are sturdy and strong. We should be seeing some tomatoes very soon. These are going to be very large tomatoes. Maybe up to one pound each. I can't wait. New photos are below. The plant is close to doubling its size every week to ten days. I'm frightened of this plant. It's taking over the garden. Can you say Little Shop Of Horrors and Audrey Junior? The latest pictures are on the right.

July 2 through July 4 - 2008

Lot's of new tomato pictures. It's amazing how fast they grow. It's starting to look like I have a picket fence back here since I've staked this plant in so many places to keep it off the ground and support the vines. Now if I only had some tomatoes on this monster plant. Any day now.

July 7 - 2008

Okay. No more tomato pictures after these until I see some baby tomatoes. The plant is a monster and growing well but who wants to see leaves. So, until I see some baby toms these will be the last pictures for a while.

July 26  through July 31 - 2008

I said I wouldn't post any more tomato plant pictures until I had something to show. Well now we're cooking with fire. The damn plant is literally bursting with toms. I've got clusters everywhere. I couldn't get my little pen cam in close enough to show the rest. Here are some photos. The latest thumbs are on the right. I'd say they'll start being ripe in about a week or less.

August 5 - 2008

Here are the latest tomato pictures. Growth continues at a good pace. Although the Summer is in full swing we really haven't had any really hot days yet. The size of the tomatoes look good. Quantity is also promising. We fed the plant today with Miracle Grow 24/08/10 all-purpose garden food so let's see if it helps speed up the ripening process. New photos are below.

August 16 - 2008

The toms continue to grow and change color. They are now beginning to turn the very pale green/yellow hue that indicates ripening. These are very large sized tomatoes. Maybe that's why the ripening process is so slow. We are now headed into the late Summer here in San Pedro so the Sun time is getting shorter. There are dozens of clusters on the vines. It's just a matter of time now. Our latest photos are shown below. Damn! My hand sure looks red in these pictures. I am thinking of re-naming this plant Audrey Junior. It's a "mean green mother" but it isn't from outer space.

August 22 - 2008

Well these damn tomatoes are just refusing to turn red. Most of them are the size of apples right now but they're still light green and yellow. I keep posting harvest estimates of "next week" but it's been three weeks now that I've been predicting a harvest. Okay. I'll say it again. We should be picking toms by next week. Here are some new pictures of the tomatoes. Hurry up tomatoes. We're gonna be out of Sunshine in about a month. I want to start filling out the table below so get going.

August 28 through September 6 - 2008

We're picking now. It's late Summer and we have run out of sunshine in our limited garden plot. All of the fruit is turning red and we've picked nine nice tomatoes so far. Some of these are close to a pound in weight from what I can see. They all have beautiful shape and color. No flowers are left so this plant is about finished producing. If we had full Sun right now this plant would probably last until November. Newest pictures are below.

     Tomato Summary and Information

Our problem this year was the location in the garden where we planted. The plant has grown to be huge. The main problem was we began to run out of Sunshine about three weeks before we anticipated. The result was/is a very slow ripening of the Tomatoes. They were at full size ten days ago but refused to turn red. As our cornstalks have been cut down the plant has begun to spread out laterally in our garden. This my help our final ripening.

Next Summer we will plant in a different location to compensate for the limited amount of Sunshine. All in all we were very pleased with the growth of this extremely healthy plant. As of now we are picking some very nice sized tomatoes but the plant is dying from lack of Sun.
