The Summer Squash Page
Here are the Zucchini and Straight-neck Yellow Summer squash we're growing right now. It took a couple of weeks before the plants were even large enough to get in a few decent photos. Now they're a couple of weeks old it's time to see what they look like. The plants are between one and four weeks old. It should be obvious which ones are the oldest. Anyway, check out the squash growing next to the pole beans. We decided on three plants since they tend to really spread out and we have very limited space.

Some squash pictures. Growth is slow due to a heavy marine layer in the last few days. The photos are from May 20 through June 02. You can also see some pole beans in the background.
June 9 through June 12 - 2008
The latest squash photos are below. One squash plant died and we replaced it with two more. Now we have some yellow squash and green zucchini squash. I can't even keep track anymore. We'll just be surprised and not worry about cross-pollination. We're not saving seeds anyway.
June 19 through June 29 - 2008
We have one plant that is currently flowering. We expect some squash soon. Our second plant is already showing little buds. The Gray Zucchini squash plant has one little baby squash. As soon as the female bud blooms it gets pollinated with a Q-Tip. I have been seeing bees but not as many as I would like so I'll help mother nature along. The latest picture is on the right.

New squash pictures. The baby Grey Squash is clearly visible now in these photos. We have two that look pretty good. There are lots of bees so we're hoping on good pollination with all squash. There is also one little Straight-neck yellow baby squash that is not quite large enough to photograph. I should have some pictures of it in a couple of days. The flower on it hasn't blossomed yet.

Here are the latest squash pictures. I also have a couple of yellow straight neck squash now on the vines. I can't say if they're pollinated yet. Time will tell. One more grey Zucchini squash made an appearance. Let's hope the Bees do their jobs. I'm seeing lots of them.

The squash are doing great. I'm pollinating now with a Q-Tip. I can't take a chance on the Bees not doing their job. It looks like I'll have some in a couple of days. The first batch didn't get pollinated hence the Q-Tip method. I'll know by Friday if I got the females pregnant. I actually cross-pollinated one yellow squash intentionally just to see what happens. The Grey ones look great.

More of our latest squash photos here. We've already harvested one very tasty Zucchini Squash. Now it looks like the yellow squash will be ready in two or three days. I'm gonna let them get a little bigger next time before we harvest. Here are the latest thumbnails.
